Lighting Technical Director, Filmgate

We at Filmgate are looking for a Maya and Lighting TD to help us out on multiple challenging projects!
We are a creative VFX boutique that works mostly with independent films, as such we rarely do the same thing twice! We are now looking for someone who can join our versitle team and help us with exciting work during the summer and fall of 2022.
Offices in Gothenburg, Stockholm and Turku but are open to hybrid solutions.

Lighting Technical Directors are responsible for the final 3D scene assembly, lighting and rendering of elements required to complete visual effects shots for high-end photo-realistic VFX films.

  • CG scene assembly including the correct assets from applicable departments
  • Lighting shots as briefed by the Visual Effects/CG Supervisor or Sequence Lead
  • Working closely with CG Supervisors to determine the best approach to solving CG challenges and developing the final look
  • Developing shots in collaboration with the shot Compositor
  • Rendering non-lighting passes as required by the shot Compositor
  • Creating lighting set ups and/or working with current set ups
  • Creating efficient rendering set ups in order to optimise render farm usage
  • Scrutinising the colours and directions of all light sources in the real-world scene and replicating them in CG
  • Staying on schedule and meeting set deadlines while maintaining the highest levels of quality
  • Ongoing communication with Production and leads regarding schedules and deadlines
  • Other duties as required including wrangling assets or elements of a shot from another department to ensure shots are completed to schedule

Essential Skills:

  • Previous experience with shot look development
  • A good understanding of colour-space
  • A strong knowledge of lighting techniques
  • A basic knowledge of Nuke or similar compositing package, including how to use layers and passes to tweak a shot after it has been rendered
  • Good knowledge of other disciplines within VFX including simulation, Modeling and UV mapping, Texturing and Camera Tracking
  • Excellent organisation, communication and interpersonal skills
  • Creative problem solving and attention to detail
  • Able to work well under pressure and meet deadlines while maintaining high quality results
  • Able to work successfully as part of a team as well as independently
  • Reliable, with good time keeping and the ability to meet deadlines
  • Flexible and adaptable with the ability to work within a pre-set workflow or pipeline but also have the creativity and problem solving skills to work around issues
  • A thorough knowledge of Maya
  • Extensive knowledge of Vray or similar production renderer
  • Basic knowledge of physically plausible shading techniques
  • Basic knowledge of Python and/or Mel scripting
  • Desirable Skills:
  • Experience with digital paint software such as Photoshop and/or Substance painter
  • Experience working with effects elements and volume rendering
  • Knowledge and experience in other render packages
  • Knowledge and experience in Compositing and Nuke
  • Experience and knowledge in Modeling and Texturing

Digital Matte Painter, Filmgate

Job description:
Digital Matte Painters are responsible for painting photo real CG environments, elements and textures for matching into live action plates or to stand on their own as DMP plates. Digital matte paintings may also be used in a 3D environment and require a high level of technical skill and artistic judgement.

This is a cross-discipline role and requires abilities in modeling, layout, matte/texture painting, lighting, rendering and compositing, as well as a strong understanding of all facets of a CG production including colour theory and LUT.

A strong understanding and sympathy for real world materials and lighting is essential. DMP artists will work closely with the CG environment artists with a strong commitment to teamwork and technical level.

Responsibilities:

  • Able to create photo-realistic digital matte paintings
  • Understand all aspects of digimatte workflow and a strong knowledge in how to combine 2D and 3D elements
  • Experience working with shoot data; including photographic and reference data, HDRIs and photogrammetry
  • Assist with and develop the look of a shot/sequence in liaison with the supervision team
  • Work alongside the production team to establish schedules and technical requirements
  • Work in partnership with CG environment artists and compositors to ensure shots are delivered to the very highest standard
  • Work closely with the VFX Supervisor to ensure that the plates meet planned concept design requirements
  • Seek out and build own photographic reference material
  • Communicate creative and technical issues effectively
  • Stay on schedule and meet set deadlines while maintaining the highest standards
  • Communicate regularly with Production and Leads regarding schedules and deadlines
  • Share techniques, reference materials and ideas with the team
  • Continue to become familiar with new tools, software, data and other related technology

Job requirements
Essential Skills:

  • An excellent working knowledge of and production experience with Nuke and Photoshop or similar
  • Excellent organisation, communication and interpersonal skills
  • A pro-active and collaborative work ethic
  • A strong eye for detail, composition, colour and lighting
  • The ability to multitask, prioritise and problem solve
  • An understanding of colour space principles

Desirable Skills:
A traditional arts background with an emphasis on photo-realistic work and environments
